Dr. Diego
Chaves-Gnecco
Almost 20 years ago, Dr. Diego recognized that Pittsburgh’s Hispanic community needed a champion to overcome disparities. He founded a pediatric office and clinic called “Salud Para Ninos” to serve largely immigrant, Spanish-speaking kids and families. His work to protect health has never been more important for this community.
“Despite all the difficulties, during the pandemic the Pittsburgh Hispanic community has been incredibly resilient,” he says. Dr. Diego cites a number of local organizations as critical supports for our Spanish-speaking neighbors dealing with the pain of illness, job loss and even death.
“Organizations like Casa San Jose, the Latino Community Center, the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, and the Birmingham Clinic definitely provide help and resources for this community.”
And alongside his staff at Salud Para Ninos, he sees reasons for optimism in 2021.
“We have a vaccine that’s safe, effective, and developed quickly,” Dr. Diego says. “We celebrate every time one of our members gets a vaccine.”
